2010-01-02 My first snow shoe trip at Bogus Basin. I parked near Frontier Lodge, bound my snow shoes to my boots, and started down the joint snow shoe and cross country ski trail. Back east the cross country skiers are more manly and make their own trail. But then, here the snow ranged from 24" to 36" inches deep. so maybe they need the help out here.
The first left is for snow shoe trails and I wound my way counter clockwise down the slope and then upwards. Crossing one cross country trail I decided to follow some tracks up to the lot. This was not an easy way to go using the snow shoes I have. I can understand why the new style exists for these steeper slopes.
There was an obvious indentation of about 12" where people shoed the day before. There was maybe 1" of new snow, so not much in the way of snow shoe-ing if you stay on the beaten path. That is more like walking on packed snow. So I occasionally went off the path and sunk in about 8". That's what I'm calling snow shoe-ing! Ony my way back up I did hit a point where there was about 8" of new snow in the indentation.
Speaking of the indentations, it was obviously all new snow shoe style hikers as the width is not wide enough for my shoes. I did not push myself, though it does not take much effort and I start sweating quite a bit.
